[MiKTeX] Problem

Hi,

I am new to TeX, so i might be talking something really basic over
here, but i really need help.
I am using MiKTeX 2.4.1667 with WinEdt (but i think that's irrelevant
here, since the compiler is giving the error). Well i am writing a
Eurographics paper and i downloaded their TeX package. I tried to
compile the sample tex file given with the package (that uses their
style file, which in turn uses some ifpdf.sty file that is supposed to
be in an oberdiek package), and it asked me to install an oberdiek
package. I did that from the online ftp server, but even after
installation it keeps on giving me the same error. The package manager
tells me that the package is installed, but while compiling it keeps
on giving me the same error and keeps asking me to install the
oberdiek package! Its driving me crazy. The deadline for Eurographics
submission is 31st January, so i really am short of time over here.
Someone please help me. Thanks in advance.

Hi Zulfiqar,

Run MiKTeX Options from the menu (Start-->Program
Files-->MiKTeX-->MiKTeX Options). Then refresh Filename Database by
clicking Refresh now in the General tab. I usually Refresh filename
database and update format files after every incremental installation.

Hope this helps.

I did that. I even uninstalled and reinstalled MiKTeX and downloaded
oberdiek again. I don't know what the hell is wrong with it, but its
driving me crazy. This is pathetic and i have spent a good 3 days
trying to get the problem fixed. Guess its back to MS Word.

Hi,

the first thing that crosses my mind (after the refreshment) is to ask this:
in which folder have you saved the package ?
could you quote the error message ?

cheers,

Try posting a minimal example with a copy of the actual error message - it's
very hard to gues what's up without more explicit information.

My only guess at the moment is that you installed the package by hand and so
somehow circumvented MiKTeX's registration of the package - and maybe you
didn't actually install it in the correct place. You should always, if
possible, use the MiKTeX package manager to do such jobs. So, please, tell
us too how and where exactly you installed the "oberdiek" package.

Cheers, Phil Ratcliffe

P.S. On average, I would say I have far more trouble with M$ Word than
LaTeX. I am, unfortunately, forced to use it though for much admin work.

Well first i installed the package when i was asked to install it
during compilation of a tex file. After sometime, when the error kept
on coming up, i un-installed and reinstalled the package from the
package manager.
I actually don't get an error. I get a dialog box quoting the
following words in verbatim (alongwith a few buttons on the dialog
box):

<quote>
The installation of the following package is required:
Name: oberdiek
Title: <none>

The package will be installed from the following source:
ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/CTAN/systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/
</quote>

and then it asks me whether i want to install the package or not. If i
choose to install it then it first installs it and then gives me the
same error again! This happens no matter how many times i install the
aforementioned package. If i choose not to install it, the compilation
stops and no output is generated. At first i speculated that the
problem might be occuring due to spaces in Miktex directory path, and
so i reinstalled it in a new location, without any spaces in names,
but to no avail. Btw i downloaded and installed the small miktex
package (around 23MB, or so).

Thanks to all those who tried to help.

Is there any registry entry (or some other file) that tells miktex
which packages are installed (or does it guess by enumerating
directories in the package sub-directory)? maybe some manual work to
that database is required?

Hi,
Post by Zulfiqar Malik
Is there any registry entry (or some other file) that tells miktex
which packages are installed
*YES*, there is : that is why Sukomal suggested to update the filename
database !!! (and that is why uninstalation is unnecessary, most of the
time).
And, to my knowledge, the only "manual work" required is to *refresh* it,
"after every incremental installation".

BTW 1, what about a minimal example of your .tex file, as asked by Philip ?

BTW 2, I checked the oberdiek package... As long as it is a .zip file, and
as long as you did not answer my question (neither Philip's) about WHERE you
installed the package, I really wonder if (1) you un-zipped it before
storage, (2) you saved it under c:\localtexmf\... and (3) you refreshed the
database... All this done while all TeX programs shut down.

Cheers,

Well, i did the installation of the package using the package manager
from the online ftp server. I did not do it manually, i used the
package manager.
As for a minimal example i am using stripped down versions of examples
at the following link:

http://egmcp1.cgv.tugraz.at/MCP_EG06/mcp/templates/LaTeX_template.zip

It is the template of the conference i am trying to write a paper for.
Interestingly enough, i went to office today, after some 5 days
(vacations) and i installed miktex and winedt there and it worked
perfectly without breaking a sweat. But its still not working on my
home machine. Thanks.
