Good Morning,

My name is Alfonso Chang and I am a user of WinEdt 6.0 con Miktex 2.8 (in

Windows 7) from Peru.

Please, I need some help in order to install GlossTex in my Miktex

distribution. In general, I'm having some troubles installing styles (*.sty)

for my own.

Can't find \localtexmf directory.

Also, some files build on previous version don't run correctly on the

version that I'm using nowadays.

I asked for help in many blogs but haven't received answers till now.

Thanks in advance.

I don't use this package but isn't it included in MiKTeX by default under Formats/LaTeX/LaTeX contrib/gloss from the Packages tab in MiKTeX options? If that's not the right package, and you have to install it from CTAN or wherever yourself, then read on...

Can't find \localtexmf directory.
This directory isn't created any more: I can't remember which version of MiKTeX dropped it but it's because creating directories in the root directory is generally considered bad (at least for programs to do so by default is bad) and a lot of people don't need localtexmf anyway. You can set-up a "TeX root" of your own from the "Roots" tab of the MiKTeX options program. All you need to do is to create a directory (e.g. C:\Users\Alfonso\Documents\texmf) and inside that create a directory called tex and then add C:\Users\Alfonso\Documents\texmf as a root from MiKTeX Options's Roots tab. Place your tex files inside C:\Users\Alfonso\Documents\texmf just as you would have placed files in C:\localtexmf and refresh the FNDB as normal.

What sort of files and which previous versions of MiKTeX? Some tex files designed for older versions (around MiKTeX 2.4/2.5) may have issues with font filenames changing - I got stung by that a few years ago because several MiKTeX packages corrected filenames for some fonts - the result is better, but the transition was painful!

Equally, packages do evolve so if you haven't upgraded MiKTeX for a long time then you may just have to change some of your TeX files to cope with new changes. comp.text.tex is a good place for general LaTeX questions.

You're on the correct list for MiKTeX problems now!

Thanks Alan for your response.

But I still have some questions. In the CTAN link there are glosstex files,
but how can I use them with Texniccenter? I cannot find the glosstex.sty
file, how can I get it? Furthermore, in the readme file it says "In order to
build GlossTeX, you need an ANSI C compiler", what does it mean?

You need to follow the other instructions in the other link to install the files. Then you should just be able to use GlossTeX within your LaTeX file. TeXnicCenter is just an editor - it's MiKTeX you need to configure.

It's distributed as a LaTeX package so you need to run latex glosstex.ins having extracted the files from the zip on CTAN. Then you'll get the distro files built (as noted on page 3 of glosstex.pdf headed "Building and Installation"). LaTeX dtx files usually tell you what they've built (and so what you need to install to your local texmf root).

Furthermore, in the readme file it says "In order to build GlossTeX,
you need an ANSI C compiler", what does it mean?
"ANSI C compiler" = "C compiler", these days the word ANSI is pretty much redundant. It means that to build the glosstex binary you need either gcc or MSVC - however there's a bin folder in glosstex.zip on CTAN and the file glosstex-i486-msdos-6.2 if renamed to glosstex.exe will give you the command (you'll need to put that somewhere in your PATH - I usually have a bin folder in my localtexmf root which is added to the PATH variable.

.c and .h files - think of them as like .tex files (i.e. source files for something else)
C compiler - bit like pdftex (converts sources into something useful)

That MS-DOS binary certainly works on Windows XP (32-bit) - by which I mean I can run it and it says "This is GlossTeX" rather than crashing! It definitely won't work on Windows Vista or Windows 7 64-bit (which is what I'm running) and I haven't got a Vista or 7 32-bit machine to try it on - but AFAIK the 32-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 still have the 16-bit MS-DOS subsystem so it really ought to work. If it doesn't work on those then you will have to install a C compiler and rebuild it from its sources roughly as in the instructions in the PDF say.

What you're trying to do is far from trivial - I have no idea what GlossTeX does but I hope it's worth it :o)

You need a glosstex binary for your system.
You can build it yourself, or download it here:
